The combined efforts of UNC, nextSource, and Workday VNDLY resulted in what Ted described as “the most successful implementation at UNC in recent years”. This success was attributed to extensive pre-selling and the inclusion of all necessary stakeholders throughout the process. 

Key Learnings and Adjustments 

Post-implementation, several unexpected findings emerged. UNC identified gaps in contractor management and internal access to crucial systems, which were promptly addressed. Additionally, mismatches in manager-contractor relationships were resolved, enhancing both security and operational efficiency. 

Ted emphasized that while technology plays a critical role, the true value comes from a holistic approach that addresses the worker experience and implements a robust governance model. This includes integrating people, processes, and technology, rather than focusing solely on tech solutions. As Ted articulated, “It’s the governance, the processes, and the people that drive the real impact. Without addressing these elements, even the best technology may fall short.” 

Positive Outcomes and Continuous Improvement 

The implementation has yielded impressive results, with UNC achieving notable reductions in average markup rates, saving approximately 30% on third-party vendor costs. With more than 320 requisitions processed in the first year and substantial vendor participation, the program has streamlined operations and delivered on its promises. 

Ted highlighted the ongoing importance of continuous education and communication across the organization. Keeping all stakeholders engaged and informed about the program’s value and progress has been essential in maintaining support and driving further improvements.
