Have Tech Employees Designed Their Own Demise?
In an April 2020 survey of 223 workers employed in the technology-sector, KPMG LLP discovered that two-thirds of respondents are concerned about losing their jobs to digital capabilities supported by artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotic software. Seventy percent of tech-sector workers also are concerned about having their jobs eliminated due to the economic impact of the pandemic, versus 57% of workers employed by companies in other sectors.
The U.S. tech sector employs approximately 6 million people, including tech professionals as well as sales, marketing, and other personnel. Tech jobs comprise an estimated 4% of the total U.S. workforce, according to CompTIA. Not all positions are vulnerable. Individuals with artificial intelligence, robotics and data management/analysis skills remain in high demand. Technology market research firm International Data Corp (IDC) projects an increase in demand in these areas of as much as 16% this year to more than 950,000 positions.
